I need advice. People frequently tease me and then explain that they were just joking. To me, it looks like they think I didn't get it. That worries me, because I usually understand when people are just joking, and I think I respond in a way that makes it pretty obvious that I get it (e.g., smiling, laughing, making a snide comment in return, etc.). So why don't they get that I get it? And why don't they seem to have this problem with other people?
Perturbedly,

Boy I'm the wrong person to ask about this -- it took a lot of effort for me to figure out how to tell if people are joking or serious, and I still often get it wrong.
Maybe it's just because you're the new guy and they want to make sure you KNOW they're joking.
This happens with me sometimes and I like to hope that it's because -I- don't often tease. It's on the edge of meanness and I don't feel comfortable doing it. So maybe people explain themselves to make sure I don't think they're mean because I don't ever do it. That's my HOPE anyway. And not that it's because they think I'm too dumb to understand.
But who knows. Maybe I'm just being self righteous about it.
Does any of this make any sense?
Yeah, that makes sense.
You could stop gritting your teeth through your smile, and wincing your eyelids as you chuckle connivingly.
Take it from a former roommate.
(Just kidding, or course ;)) lol
Ooh! I love to give advice! I don't really have any words of wisdom on this subject, so let me present some creative solutions to the problem. Solution #1 - Become a hermit. Eliminates a LOT of awkward social interactions. Also, you don't have to shower or shave as often. Solution #2 - Get new friends. Everyone says that you can't solve a problem by running away from it, but how can they be sure?
Thanks, Jordan and Steve. I will, um... not anti-un-contra-non-follow your advice.
Wait a sec... when did Jordan learn how to comment on blogs (or even what a blog is!) ??
I remember the good ol' days when I taught him how to save a file to his Desktop. Three times. Before just doing it myself.
Ah kids, they grow up so fast! Well done, J-daug. Well done indeed.
That's a different Jordan... this is my friend J. W., not J. O.
Interesting conundrum... I suggest more cowbell.
